How to read RTP and house edge
Every casino game is governed by one number, expressed two ways. RTP (Return to Player) is the share of all money wagered that a game is mathematically designed to pay back over a very large number of rounds. House edge is the slice the casino keeps. They are complements of each other, so the conversion is simply house edge = 100% − RTP. A dice game advertised at 99% RTP has a 1% house edge; a slot at 96% RTP has a 4% house edge. There is no third hidden number — once you know one, you know the other, and that is exactly what the calculator above does the instant you type an RTP.
The practical question every player actually wants answered is "what will this cost me to play?" That is the expected loss, and it depends on three inputs: the house edge, your bet size, and how many bets you place. Multiply your bet size by the number of bets and you get your turnover — the total volume of money that passes through the game. Your expected loss is that turnover multiplied by the house edge. Five hundred $2 bets is $1,000 of turnover; at a 1% edge the math expects you to be down $10 by the end. The same $1,000 of turnover on a 4% slot expects a $40 loss. Notice that the deposit you started with never enters the formula — what matters is how much you wager, not how much you bring.
Why turnover, not deposit, is the number that bleeds your bankroll
This is the insight that trips up most players. If you deposit $100 and play a 1% edge dice game, you do not lose 1% of $100. You lose 1% of everything you wager, and a $100 bankroll on a fast game can easily be wagered ten, twenty or fifty times over before it is gone, because winnings get re-bet. Wager that $100 through twenty times and your turnover is $2,000 — so at a 1% edge the expected loss is $20, even though you only ever deposited $100. This is why two players who deposit the same amount can have wildly different outcomes: the one who places more bets, or bets bigger relative to bankroll, exposes more turnover to the edge.
It is also why "low house edge" is the single most powerful lever a player controls. Choosing a 1% game over a 4% game does not change your luck on any individual spin, but across the same amount of play it cuts your expected cost by 75%. RTP is a long-run average, not a session promise
Here is the most important caveat on this entire page: RTP describes the long run, and the long run is much longer than you think. A 99% RTP does not mean you will get 99% of your deposit back tonight. In a single session the result is dominated by variance — the natural swing of random outcomes — not by the edge. You can sit down at a 99% RTP game and double your money, or lose every cent, and both are completely consistent with the published figure. The edge only becomes visible after tens of thousands of rounds, as the noise averages out and the underlying expectation shows through.
This is also why betting systems do not work. The Martingale (double-after-a-loss) and its cousins rearrange when your wins and losses land, but they cannot alter the edge baked into each individual bet. A sequence of negative-expectation bets has a negative expectation no matter how you stake them. The only genuine levers are the three the calculator exposes: lower the edge (better game), lower the turnover (fewer or smaller bets), or play a true skill game where correct decisions push the achievable RTP to its ceiling.
How provably fair fits in
If house edge is the "how much," provably fair is the "can I trust it." Provably fair games use cryptography — a hashed server seed, your own client seed, and an incrementing nonce — so that after each bet you can independently verify the result was not altered. Crucially, provably fair does not lower the house edge. A 1% dice game is still 1% whether or not it is provably fair. What the system guarantees is that the published RTP is the real RTP: the operator cannot quietly skew outcomes to take more than the stated edge, because every result is mathematically auditable. Worked example
Say you plan an evening on a provably fair crash game at 99% RTP, betting $1 a round, and you expect to place around 800 rounds. Turnover is 800 × $1 = $800. House edge is 100% − 99% = 1%. Expected loss is $800 × 1% = $8. That $8 is the long-run "price of admission" for that volume of play — your real night could finish up $120 or down $90, but the math expects the cost of the edge to be about eight dollars. Swap to a 96% slot at the same stake and round count and the expected cost quadruples to $32 for the identical amount of action.
