HOW TO PLAY MINES AT STAKE

Mines is a Minesweeper-style game on a 5x5 grid of 25 tiles. Before the round you set your bet and choose how many mines (1 to 24) are hidden among the tiles — everything else is a gem. HOW STAKE MINES IS PROVABLY FAIR

Mines is a Stake Original, and like every Stake Original it is provably fair — the entire mine layout is locked in by cryptography before you click a single tile, and you can verify afterwards that nothing moved. Four inputs decide where the mines sit:

  • Server seed — generated by Stake and shown to you up front only as a hashed commitment, so it can’t be swapped once you start. The full seed is revealed when you rotate your seed pair.

  • Nonce — a per-bet counter that rises by one each round, making every layout unique under the same seed pair.
  • Cursor — advances to generate further random bytes when more numbers are needed to place all the mines.

Stake’s published algorithm feeds server seed + client seed + nonce into HMAC-SHA256 to produce 32 bytes. Bytes are read in 4-byte chunks, and each chunk becomes a float in [0,1) — that gives 8 floats per 32-byte block, and the cursor generates more blocks if needed:

Those floats drive a Fisher-Yates-style shuffle: each float picks a tile index from the pool of remaining positions (initially 0–24); once a tile is chosen for a mine it is removed from the pool, and the process repeats until every mine has a unique tile. Because the server seed is hashed and shown to you before the bet, Stake cannot move a mine after you start clicking. To check a past round yourself: open Settings → Fairness, rotate/unhash your active server seed to reveal its plaintext (this also generates a new pair), then feed that revealed server seed, your client seed, the round’s nonce and the mine count into Stake’s own verifier or a third-party checker to recompute the exact layout. The honest limit: you can only verify bets made before you unhashed/rotated that server seed. Verification proves the layout was committed in advance and not tampered with — it does not remove the house edge. The 1% is inside the multiplier maths, so the game is verifiable and random, but still negative expected value over time.

THE ODDS: WHAT THE MULTIPLIERS ACTUALLY ARE

Mines is pure independent probability with no skill edge on the outcome — which tile you click never changes your odds, because the whole layout is fixed at round start. With M mines on 25 tiles, the chance your next single click is safe is simply (safe tiles remaining) ÷ (tiles remaining). The fair multiplier after revealing k safe gems is the inverse of your cumulative survival probability, trimmed by the 1% edge:

That trailing 0.99 is the 1% house edge, baked straight into every payout. Reading it in plain numbers:

  • 1 mine, reveal 1 gem — about 1.03x (0.99 × 25/24); your next click is safe 24 times in 25.
  • 3 mines, reveal 1 gem — about 1.13x; safe odds 22/25 on that first pick.
  • 1 mine, clear all 24 gems — the 5,148,297x jackpot, but worse than 1 in 2.7 million to complete.
  • More mines = higher per-step multiplier, exponentially lower survival odds — the curve climbs fast and busts faster.

Every round is independent: a tile that was safe last round is no more or less likely to be safe now, and no tile is ever “due.” The average return is −1% of your stake per bet, whatever pattern you think you see in your history.

MINES STRATEGY: WHAT WORKS, WHAT DOESN’T

No strategy changes the 1% edge — Mines is negative-EV on every bet. What good play actually does is manage your variance and protect your bankroll, so you can play longer for the same expected cost. The real levers:

  • Match mine count and cash-out target to your bankroll — fewer mines plus an early cashout is low-volatility (frequent small wins); many mines or deep digs is lottery-like variance. Pick the profile you can afford to lose.
